The problem
Every IoT project started from scratch: device connectors, calculations, rules, notifications, reports. We needed one foundation to build different applications on, without rewriting it each time.
Architecture
- Streaming ingestion from heterogeneous devices, including proprietary protocols.
- Processing with Apache Kafka and Java Spring Boot microservices.
- Dynamic calculation of new measures and real-time aggregation.
- Event engine and polygon geofencing.
- Data lakehouse with live and historical persistence, Apache Airflow pipelines.
- Integration APIs for ERP, CRM, WMS and OEM telematics.
Technical choices
- Runtime configuration: rules, measures and geofences are configured from a console, with no redeploy.
- Fault tolerance: data recovery when a device loses connectivity.
- Security by design: OAuth2, encryption, OWASP audit logging.
Results
ControlFleet, the first vertical built on SIoTRA, is a fleet management application (tracking, digital tachograph, fuel, maintenance, compliance deadlines). It went into production in three months and now follows more than 1,000 vehicles in 24/7 operation.
The same foundation lends itself to other verticals, such as waste management and cold chain.
My role
Partner at NITECH and head of architecture: platform co-design, technology choices, development of the core components, UX research on the Flutter app (core operational tasks went from 7 taps to 2).
